My cousin and his wife became new parents in late September. They decided to keep the gender a secret, let alone the fact that they were carrying two babies! So imagine our surprise when everyone gets an early morning phone call one bleak Thursday, announcing that not only is their baby girl here, alive, and healthy — but it’s actually two. Identical TWINS!
Since my mom spent the weekend with me in DC for my bridal shower, she figured she was more than halfway to NYC — where my cousin, his wife, and the twins lives. So she extended her trip, and we took the Amtrak up to NYC last Sunday night. We literally spent 36 hours there, but we had such a fun mini-trip.
Sunday, 8PM We arrived at the Affinia Shelburne, and kindly were upgraded to a suite. To stretch our legs a bit, we took a late night stroll around the city, and ended up back at the hotel bar for a nightcap.
Monday, 8AM We woke up Monday morning and B-lined to the nearest Starbucks. We each worked for a bit before heading over to Macy’s to do a little shopping. I got a new winter coat (needed for the capsule), and my mom decided to take it upon herself to spruce up our wedding registry.
11AM I believe the complaint from literally every single one of my mother and grandmothers friends (plus Alex’s mom, and her friends) was that our registry was too… practical. I guess that’s a bad thing?
1PM My mom had her work cut out for her, and she had a blast while doing it. Look at that face! That’s a face of determination! After she wore herself out, we met my cousin Josh for lunch downtown. Afterwards, I decided I couldn’t go on without popping into DryBar. So we did that before we headed down to Brooklyn.
4PM Once in Brooklyn, We got coffee with my childhood BFF, Allie, which was so lovely. Then, it was off to meet the twins!
6PM I think my heart exploded from happiness upon meeting the girls. And more than that, my cousin was glowing. Dad life really, really does suit him. And his wife is doing great. I’m in awe that they’re handling two newborns so well.
9PM After we left, we got late night pizza on the drive back to our hotel, and passed out while watching pre-election coverage.
Tuesday, 6:30AM We were up and ready to head home on Tuesday. We said our goodbyes to NYC. My mom flew back to South Florida, and I took the Amtrak back to Union Station.
Another great mother / daughter trip for the books, I’m so happy we made it happen!
