A few months ago, I signed up for Book of the Month. Judges select 5 Books for the Month, and then you select one out of the five you’d like to receive in the mail. Before I signed up, I reviewed their past selections, and more frequently that not, BOTM aligned well with my reading preferences. (Like this, this, and this). I knew it would be a great fit, so not only did I sign up, but I also troll their past selections, and use it for my Reading List springboard.
And that’s how I came across The Trespasser by Tana French. Here’s what I thought, and why it’s deemed a Bees Book of the Month.
THE TRESPASSER BY TANA FRENCH
This is French’s sixth or seventh ‘Murder Squad’ novel. Apparently (I didn’t learn this until recently), French’s main character is always a different detective. In the The Trespasser, Antoinette Conway takes the lead, along with her partner Stephen Moran. Conway is the only woman on the force, and it doesn’t help that her partner is the only person who is glad she’s there. She is harassed, the victim of nasty pranks, and bullied at work. She isn’t thrilled with how work is going these days.
And then, the case that lands in their lap seems to be another domestic dispute gone wrong. Which is boring, not at all challenging, and not what Conway signed up for. Aislinn Murry is young, blonde, and pretty. She is found dead in her picture perfect living room. Two elder, more experienced detectives are pushing for Conway and Moran to arrest Aislinn’s boyfriend. But something isn’t quite adding up. Conway begins to get paranoid. And as she digs deeper and deeper, this case turns into anything but a domestic dispute gone wrong.
The ending was pretty surprising, and I very much enjoyed the twist. The book is on the longer side, and goes into a ton of detail. It’s quite fascinating! Have you read this book? If so, what did you think?
