The last handful of books I’ve read were all historical fictions centering around WWII. So it was really refreshing to pick up a go-to genre of mine — a psychological thriller.
The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain was the type of book that was pretty tough to put down, which is something I very much look for in a book. I love being able to read something cover to cover in under a week. Something that hooks you in the very first chapter.
The book is about a prodigy violinist, Lisa MacPherson, who committed suicide as a teenager. Twenty years later, Lisa’s younger sister, Riley, is cleaning out their fathers home in North Carolina after his passing. As Riley packs up her childhood home, she finds evidence that Lisa is alive. Riley start digging, and uncovers secret, after secret, after jaw dropping secret. We find out why Lisa ran away all those years ago, and boy, is it good. Riley’s whole world is turned upside down, and what she thought of her family is now completely unraveling at the seams.
While the plot wasn’t terribly conceivable, it’s the writing that made it believable. The book was immensely suspenseful and had multiple twists that totally blew me away. The chapters switch from Riley in the present to Lisa in the past, dating back to her alleged suicide. The story becomes even more captivating as the twists and turns really start to take hold.
I’m going to have to browse through Diane Chamberlain’s books, because if any of her other books is as captivating as The Silent Sister, it wouldn’t kill to pick up another by her. It’s the perfect Sunday morning, still in PJ’s, curled up on the couch, with a cup of coffee kind of book.
