It’s been a long time since I’ve read an Emily Giffin novel. If I had to pinpoint the last time I read one of her novels, I’d say junior year of college. That’s when I binged on her first four books: Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Baby Proof, and Love the One You’re With. I loved Giffin and her writing, but as my reading branched out to darker tales (read: murder), she sort of fell off my radar. And then I saw the hype for her latest and greatest, First Comes Love.
A story about sisterly love, forgiveness, and finding your own path, regardless of the decisions you’ve made along the way. Two sisters, in Atlanta in their late thirties are living very, very different lives. (I know what you’re thinking. But no, First Comes Love is not even remotely like Pretty Girls. Just the location and two main characters relationship (sisters) is the same). A terrible tragedy struck 15 years ago (ok, yes, another Pretty Girls similarity). In the weeks leading up the ‘anniversary’ of said tragedy, the two sisters, Meredith and Josie, begin to question and face aspects in their lives they would both much rather ignore.
First Comes Love was fast paced, fun to read — just like Giffin’s other novels — and very heartwarming. Chapters alternated back and forth, all in present time, between Meredith and Josie. I’m so glad I picked up this book. It was like grabbing coffee with a long lost friend from school. I gobbled this up in just shy of a week and a bit sad when it ended. If you’re a fan of Giffin’s first few books, I suggest you add this one to your list.
PS. Did you know that the Something Borrowed, staring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, and John Krasinski (my forever mancrush) was based off Emily Giffin’s novel?
