OVERRATED READS | VOLUME NO. 13
Hello, and welcome back to a much overdue edition of overrated reads! It’s been a while, but I’m pumped to start up this series again.
I should preface with the fact that I did enjoy these books, but I did find them to be hyped up quite a bit. With that said, I still ended up giving each of the three books below either a 3 or 4 stars on Goodreads.
THE OTHER WOMAN BY SANDIE JONES
I usually enjoy Reese Whiterspoon Book Club picks, and sadly, I feel let down with this one. I will admit that I was hooked from the beginning and absolutely needed to know the ending, but that doesn’t negate that the book in it’s entirety was complete garbage. The characters’ motivations and actions were not one that exists in this reality, the plot was paper thin, and our three main characters were beyond insufferable.
NINTH HOUSE BY LEIGH BARDUGO
Oh my god I know. I know I’m the unpopular opinion here, but it felt like reading an R rated version of Harry Potter goes to Yale. The first half was so boring, I had to force myself to power though, all while feeling so lost and having no idea what I was even reading. The second half picked up a bit and I very much enjoyed the ending, but I really don’t think that makes up for it. Perhaps I’m not a Leigh Bardugo fan (she seems to have quite the loyal fanbase). Or perhaps this just isn’t the right genre for me. I simply couldn’t get into this story the way I hoped.
THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS BY LISA JEWELL
Another unpopular opinion over here! Even to myself. I like Lisa Jewell. I wanted to like this book. It was eerie and strange, dark and twisted. It was hard to put down. But it just didn’t come together for me. The characters’ motivations in present day didn’t make much sense, nor seem convincing. The story was forgettable, weak in a lot of areas, and just didn’t do it for me. Maybe next time, Lisa Jewell.
See you back here soon!
