The last time I posted an Overrated Reads series was back in April of last year, we’re very overdue for another round. Most of these reviews are going to be unpopular opinions, but hey! that’s what this series is all about.
Normal People by Sally Rooney
Yes. I went there. And I know I’m not alone either. I think the only thing I have to say about this book is MEH?! I felt like nothing happened, ever. It was mildly interesting, yet completely boring at the same time. I watched like two episodes of the screen adaption on Hulu and felt the same way. Bored AF. I know it had it’s moment in the height of quarantine, but I just couldn’t get on board.
The Mother-In-Law by Sally Hepworth
Waiting, waiting, waiting for anything, anything, anything to happen. And it didn’t. Bored to tears and the main driving narrative, the tension between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, is as bland and mild as could be. So boring. This is not the domestic thriller it’s marketed to be.
In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
This falls into my ‘WTF did I just read?’ category. It was so terrible, yet I couldn’t stop reading. Like a jaw dropping car crash that you simply cannot look away from. I needed to know what happened but hated every minute of it. The ending SORT OF redeemed itself, but that’s being very generous. Avoid! PS. not a romance. Not sure why it’s marketed as one.
The Last Flight by Julie Clark
Important note: I was 4 weeks PP with my son. I was exhausted as I read this in between feedings and naps and diaper changes (his and mine). I wanted to like this book, I just couldn’t. I didn’t completely dislike it, but I didn’t enjoy reading it either. I found it too slowly paced for what it was supposed to be. I believe there will be a book to screen adaptation, and I’m sure they’ll make it more exciting, flesh out the characters a bit better. It just fell flat for me.
And that’s it for now! Thanks for reading along.
