Where I Lost Her by T. Greenwood was one of those extremely gripping books that sucks you in from page one. I cracked this book open on a bleak, rainy Friday evening after dinner, a tall glass of white wine in hand. By the time Sunday afternoon rolled around, I had finished. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you know that I’m a happy camper if I have a hard time parting with a book.
THE PLOT
Tess is still on the recovery from a pretty traumatic event, which happened 8 years ago in Guatemala. The event being a botched foreign adoption. She and her husband, Jake, have been slowly growing apart ever since. Tess and Jake are spending the weekend, visiting her lifelong, childhood friend in her hometown of rural Vermont.
One evening, Tess runs out to the nearest liquor store to grab more wine for the group. As she’s driving home, she has to slam on her breaks to avoid hitting a child — who is standing in the middle of the road. As Tess looks closer, she sees that it’s a small little girl wearing nothing but a tutu and lady bug rain-boots.
Tess idles the car, and tries to help the girl, clearly lost and cold, but before she can get too close, the child runs into the woods. With no cell reception (how convenient) Tess speeds back to her friends home. The police are called, and an all hands on deck search — including helicopters and dogs — begins. However, after days of searching, with not a trace of evidence and no missing child reported, the police are beginning to suspect Tess made this up. Especially given the events of her past.
THE WRITING
The author, T. Greenwood, did a fantastic job of weaving in flashbacks of Guatemala throughout the novel, and I honestly had no idea how the book would end. Without spoiling anything, it was definitely a solid twist. This book will pull you in with its rich characters, heavy emotions, and alluring suspense. I really enjoyed it.
Also! I loved the book cover, such a beautiful and hypnotic photo!
