Let me tell you about the most magical place I’ve been in the last few weeks…. The Sunday morning after our farewell wedding brunch, Alex and I packed up the bridal suite, and hit the road for Sedona. After lunch, an ATM and coffee run, we were finally situated on the road, heading North from Tubac Golf Resort to L’Auberge in Sedona.
We were somewhere between Tucson and Phoenix when we saw a sign for an ostrich petting zoo. We looked at each other, and without another word, Alex immediately pulled off the highway at the next exit. We couldn’t not go, right?
THE WORLD FAMOUS ROOSTER COGBURN OSTRICH RANCH
For $10 each, we got to feed the following animals: goats, donkeys, sheep, ostriches, string-rays, ducks, bunnies, lorikeets, and deer. Oh my! It was the best $10 we had spent all day, IMO.
Oh my gawd. This face. I couldn’t stop laughing. Alex spent the rest of our mini-moon imitating it, and let me tell you, he does quite the impression! These big meaty donkey teeth aren’t as scary as they look. Most of the animals were quite delicate when they take food from your hand. But with the donkeys, I had a blast shooting baskets in their open mouths.
Deer, goats, and sheep were all really delicate as well. It felt like getting little kisses from a baby. (Side bar: do you recognize the sweater?)
And then, it came time to feed the ostriches! I was pumped. I was so ready, I was born ready. And then, as I stuck my hand out, with a pellet, as instructed, I didn’t experience a little baby kiss. No. Not even close. I got bit! Notice how calm and ready I am to hand feed this animal, and what does he do? HE BITES ME. What an assh*le! Look at that smug look on his face. Alex thought the sign (right next to the scene of the crime) was hilarious.
Once recovered, and realized I still had all five fingers on my left hand, we went into the lorikeet room. They give you a little cup of nectar and BOOM! All the birds flock to you and fight each other to their death to get a little sip sip of that drannnnk. Alex got pooped on, twice. He didn’t find it as funny as I did. After we fed every animal we browsed the gift shop, bought a hollowed out ostrich egg and magnet. It put us in such a great mood, and kickstarted our lovely mini-moon. We were back on the road, (after washing our hands 11 times) and ready for Sedona!
